The Law

The Slave Trade Act was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom passed in 1807 the full title of which is "An Act for the Abolition of the Slave Trade". The original act is still held among the collections of the Parliamentary Archives.

Hence 25 March 2007 will mark 200 years to the day that this Bill was passed to abolish the slave trade in United Kingdom. This was achieved under a Whig government lead by The Lord Grenville. Which was one of its last acts of government for this term, as 7 days later the Tory's regained control.

On the throne was King George III, who also saw in the Act of Union (creation of United Kingdom 1801), his son William IV saw in the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act. It should also be noted that the controlling government was also Whig.
